Healthcare is one of the most direct study-to-career routes available to Nepali students in Australia. Australia's healthcare system has an ongoing, structural demand for registered nurses, and international graduates of an accredited Australian nursing degree can move from graduation into workforce registration and, from there, into some of the most consistently available skilled-migration options in the country.
Degree types and AHPRA registration
A Bachelor of Nursing (three years, or a two-year Graduate Entry / Pre-Registration Master's for students who already hold a related degree) is the standard route to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), administered through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Graduates of an AHPRA-approved program register directly on completion. Nepali applicants who already hold a nursing qualification from Nepal instead go through the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) pathway — NCLEX and OSCE exams — which is slower and costlier than direct registration. For most Nepali students without an existing nursing degree, enrolling directly in an AHPRA-approved Australian Bachelor of Nursing is the more reliable route to registration and employment.
Entry requirements
• Academic: completion of +2/A-Level equivalent with strong results in Biology and English; some universities also expect Chemistry. Students without a science background can often enter through a Navitas or university-affiliated diploma pathway before progressing to the Bachelor of Nursing.
• English language: AHPRA's registration standard requires IELTS Academic 7.0 overall (7.0 in listening, reading and speaking, 6.5 in writing), or equivalent scores on OET, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT (booked specifically as "TOEFL for Australia"). This is a fixed AHPRA requirement, separate from — and often higher than — the score a university itself asks for at enrolment.
• Health clearances required before clinical placement: immunisation records (COVID-19, Hepatitis B with serology, MMR, Varicella, Pertussis, TB screening, annual influenza), a National Police Check, and a Working with Children Check in the relevant state.
• Some universities interview shortlisted nursing applicants, including international candidates, by video call.
• CEE Certificate.
Important: a number of Australian universities admit nursing students with IELTS 6.5, which is enough to enrol but not enough to register with AHPRA on graduation. Students should confirm the university's entry score against AHPRA's 7.0 registration requirement before choosing a course, so they aren't left with a completed degree and no path to practise.
Structure and placements
A significant share of an Australian nursing degree — commonly several hundred hours across the course — is spent on supervised clinical placement in hospitals, aged care facilities and community health settings. Placement blocks are scheduled by the university and reduce flexibility for part-time work during those weeks, which is worth factoring into a student's budget planning from the start.
Costs and outcomes
International tuition for nursing degrees in Australia typically runs higher than standard business or humanities courses because of the clinical training component — budget roughly AUD 28,000–38,000 per year depending on the university, higher at Group of Eight institutions. On the outcome side, newly qualified registered nurses in Australia currently earn in the region of AUD 70,000–85,000 per year, rising into the AUD 90,000–120,000+ range for senior and advanced-practice roles, with penalty rates for night, weekend and public holiday shifts adding further to take-home pay. Nursing also sits on Australia's skilled occupation lists, giving graduates access to employer-sponsored visas and, after an ANMAC skills assessment, to permanent skilled migration pathways such as the Subclass 189 and 190 visas — among the more dependable long-term routes to Australian residence available to any graduate profession.
