MBA vs Master's in Business — not the same qualification
An MBA in Australia is a generalist management qualification aimed at candidates with existing professional experience. Most reputable programmes ask for at least 2–3 years of full-time work experience, and executive-style MBAs at institutions such as UNSW's AGSM ask for considerably more — a minimum of five years post-graduate experience, with most successful applicants averaging around eleven. A Master's in a specific field — International Business, Professional Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Supply Chain Management — is instead built for recent graduates with little or no work history. Nepali students applying straight after a bachelor's degree, without several years of managerial experience, are almost always a stronger fit for a specialist Master's than an MBA, and applying for a top-tier MBA without the expected experience typically results in rejection rather than a weaker offer.
Entry requirements
• Master's in Business (various): a relevant bachelor's degree, typically 55–60% or above from a recognised Nepali university; IELTS 6.5 overall is common, with some programmes accepting 6.0.
• MBA: a bachelor's degree plus 2–5 years of full-time work experience (5+ years for executive-track programmes); IELTS 6.5 or above; a GMAT score of roughly 550–600 is requested by some schools, though many Australian MBAs waive this for candidates with a strong professional profile.
• Living cost evidence: the Australian government currently requires international students to demonstrate access to at least AUD 29,710 per year in living funds as part of the student visa (subclass 500) application, separate from tuition.
Choosing a specialisation
A Master's in Professional Accounting or Accounting and Finance is a common choice because it leads toward CPA Australia or CA ANZ accreditation and a clearer route into banking, audit and financial roles. A Master's in International Business is broader and suits students without a fixed career direction. Several universities now offer one-year accelerated MBA formats (Melbourne Business School among them), which reduce both time out of the workforce and total tuition cost compared with the standard two-year format.
Costs and career pathway
Business Master's tuition in Australia typically runs in the range of AUD 35,000–50,000 per year at most universities, with MBA programmes often priced at a similar or higher level depending on the school and format. Business graduates do not have a subject-specific sponsored visa route in the way nursing or ICT occupations do, so the realistic pathway to remaining in Australia longer-term runs through the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which currently grants 2–3 years of unrestricted work rights to eligible graduates without needing an employer sponsor, giving time to secure a graduate-level role and, from there, pursue employer-sponsored or skilled migration options if the specific occupation is in demand.
